Palace of Westminster, London
Topp & Co. were commissioned to manufacture and install new boundary gates and railings at the Palace of Westminster, London.
The gates and railings have been installed in two stages with stage two recently finished. As part of this phase, we also were asked to traditionally make four bespoke decorative in-fill panels for the colonnade with design features for these panels taken from existing ironwork nearby. These decorative panels were made by our blacksmiths using traditional techniques including fire welding for the three finials on top of the uprights. We used our electric induction heater as oppose to the traditional coke hearth to do these fire welds. The four colonnade panels were made from genuine wrought iron rather than steel. Once installed the screens blended nicely into the historical fabric of the building. The finished panels have glass mounted to the outer face as part of the design requirements.
To be awarded such commissions is a testament to the world-class reputation of Topp & Co. The challenging logistics involved in this particular project included an uncompromising schedule of works, road closures, overnight works, strict security checks all of which added to the complexity of already challenging manufacturing requirements. These challenges are not uncommon in architecturally sensitive sites such as this.
