Lilburn Bridge Refurbishment & Repairs

Lilburn Bridge is a grade 2 listed building in Lilburn Northumberland

Following the damage to the bridge by an articulated wagon. Topp and Co have been awarded the contract to complete the refurbishment and repairs to the metalwork of the bridge. Prior to the careful removal of damaged and salvegable items the bridge was surveyed and drawings produced. All the bridge panels were inspected and tagged for re-assembly in our workshops prior to installation. The decorative cast iron panels and connecting posts were blast cleaned prior to the repair of salvageable items. The backstays were repaired where possible and where the damage was to severe new ones were forged in the workshop by our blacksmiths

New casting patterns had to be made using the existing panels as reference so that the foundry could pour the new castings for both the panels and posts.

Paint samples were taken following removal of the metalwork items but due to earlier paint refurbishment there was no creditable evidence of earlier paint or colour schemes so the paint colour chosen is to match the existing colour.

The work is ongoing at the moment and further updates will be posted.
