York city walls. New wrought iron gate for Bootham Bar
New gate designed for an ancient setting
The city walls are punctuated by four main gatehouses or ‘bars’. These restricted traffic in medieval times, and were used to extract tolls, as well as being defensive positions in times of war.
The new gate at Bootham was designed in a modern fashion but paying service to the old materials and methods of construction like riveted heels and tenons, hot punched and swelled holes . Made entirely of genuine puddled wrought iron, bronze mesh was added to keep out the pigeons.
