MANCHESTER TOWN HALL – Ongoing

TOPP & Co have been commission to repair and restore the ironwork in this iconic building for current and future generations.

Having recently completed a large restoration project for the impressive gates and railings surrounding The Natural History Museum in London we feel very familiar with the ironwork at Manchester Town Hall as both buildings were designed by the same architect Alfred Waterhouse and the ironwork is remarkably similar in design and how it was crafted.

The careful planning and logistical challenges involved when working in architecturally sensitive sites, especially busy City centres such Manchester, is something we are used to. As well as the Natural History museum we have also recently completed a large project at The Palace of Westminster.

The Town Hall Complex is one of Manchester’s greatest cultural and civic assets, which makes a significant contribution not only to the heritage but also to the identity of the City. Manchester Town Hall and Albert Square are the most significant of the buildings and public realm within the Complex. The Town Hall itself, which opened in 1877, is an internationally significnt landmark, Grade I listed and considered to be one of the masterpieces of Victorian architecture. It’s cherished by the people of the city who view it as the civic heart of Manchester.

The scope of works we have been asked to provide is large, wide ranging and includes:

·         Over 2500 Cast Iron Grilles –located throughout the building corridors at each level covering existing shallow service trenches. The work involved covers both the cleaning and refurbishing of existing grilles as well as the casting of new grilles to replace broken ones.

·         Refurbish original, supply new castings and install External Moat wall railing, gates and landscape metalwork around the outside of the Town Hall.

·         Refurbishment of several large ornamental wrought iron gates

·         Fabrication of new steel gates in the style of the original gates

·         Handrails and Guardrails throughout the building – consisting of newly fabricated sections, additions to existing, repairs to existing.

·         New fabricated Metal Screens.

·         Internal Metalwork Repairs in general.

This work is on going and updated project pictures will be posted as work progresses
