Chris Topp

Chris Topp’s interest and work with historic materials has been a lifelong affair. Chris is the founder of TOPP & Co. which now employs a team of craftsmen working out of one of the largest and best equipped workshops of its kind in the country.

Chris Topp began his career as a blacksmith at a time when there was little formal training available, learning the craft on the job under the guidance of a time served smith. His expertise is in the traditional skills of the blacksmiths craft and particularly the application of these skills to the restoration of ironwork. This combined with his management skills has lead to the establishment of one of the largest blacksmithing workshops in the UK where he demands high quality from his team of smiths on both large and small scale projects.

Although best known for restoration his inquisitive nature has gained him a wide range of skills and expertise in design and construction of ironwork resulting in a varied yet highly respected portfolio. In addition he set up a hot rolling mill to supply genuine wrought iron to blacksmiths for restoration work and in doing so became the world’s sole supplier.

Chris Topp gives lectures on ironwork and renovation to, for example, postgraduate students in conservation at the University of York’s School of Archaeology, Newcastle University, Herriot Watt University, Historic Scotland, Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust.
